Welcome 2012 Happening- artist Kim Barry explores where our minds and hearts are at in America. The exhibit is built around the social interactive installation- The Dream Map- which engages each viewer to share their deepest heart's desire for their life. What can be learned from the answers and what forward movement does this conversation have for each person? The installation will be up all 2012 and will be collecting dreams from all over the United States. The current hold on financial resources by the banks and the corporate interests seems to create a blockage, an obstacle, and a deterrent. Many of us believe the dreaming can only be left to the top tier of corporate America. There is no more room to create our own reality in our current world.

West Eleven Creative House had it's first happening on 11.11.11, in which Kim Barry and Joey Thate planned an awesome evening of events. I unfortunately arrived late, so I missed Rachel Borovik's musical set, but I kept hearing how freaking amazing it was. I did, however, get to participate in a game of adult Jenga, where instead of trying to remove harmless blocks you had to stack sharp pieces of wood and nails on top of each other. And I think that it's probably one of the coolest art games ever invented.

They have invited , writer and creative visionary, Courtney Barriger, and singer/ song writer and cruel vocal temptress to ears everywhere , Rachel Borovik, to collaborate.

7:30pm Courtney Barriger discusses her newly published book, “NightBook” and will have signed copies available.

8:30pm Rachel Borovik graces us with a live set or two, (if we are good).

10:30pm Watch one of Kim’s infamous “choice” movies from her classic , obscure and always entertaining collection. Prepare yourselves for cloud pillows to lounge upon during the music and the film .

As always, Kim and Joey will have an interactive installation revolving around the night’s juicy and not so juicy moments. Details are under wraps.

BLOW POP looks at these two artists connection to nostalgia from the 1990's. By bringing back these relics and imagery from yesterday, both artists work appear to be a celebration, of sorts. Turned On Installation at West Eleven

The concept came in two parts for "Turned On", which opened at West Eleven, Oct 1, 2011. This is a painting without canvas, a patent pending chemical combination that I came across a couple of years ago. Once set and dried, this piece is highly flexible, durable, and reworkable. It can be installed on walls, floors, ceilings, or a combination of all three multiple times and, thereby, gives the illusion of paint being poured directly on a surface and frozen, wet, mid-movement. It is free of any canvas constraint.

The current layout gives the illusion that the paint "oozes" from an electrical socket to the right, drips down the wall, onto the floor as you see here, below

" The Golden Bough"

In it, we are described as having a much more mystical, magical inner world than we allow ourselves. We are more than our daily actions of waking up, turning off the alarm, getting to work on time (or else run the risk of getting fired), work mindlessly, fight traffic, cook dinner, watch tv, go to bed, and reset again tomorrow. We have creative impulses, unique to each person, as represented by the dancers in red and gray in the picture below. We move through life by these impulses --picking up and taking away moments that add great potential energy to the world around us.

As the dancers move throughout, they strive for the highest of heights as shown below

or begin to fall into the despairs, struggles, and loss as detailed in the pictures below

It is all how we choose to live through our ideas, beliefs, and as a by product, our actions

By adding "Tad," the man, in this setting, his presence represents someone in our physical reality who has been mentally opened up to this inner reality of creative awareness and has become immersed or "Turned On" by the energy of it. Hence the symbolism of the electrical socket being the source of the painting

American Values Part II

Here are some highlights of the "American Values Part II" Installation that opened at West Eleven, Saturday Oct 1, 2011. This public interactive piece establishes the story of "Fat Man" with the help of a ,Pete the Pod, character. His words are written on the tablet below with Pete in the grass as he greets curious visitors. After each visitor reads the story of Fat Man, they are asked to share their "fat man" in their own lives, how they deal, and advice for Pete to help his fellow pods.

And behind me, meet Fat Man. Kinda looks like Mr. Clean meets Stay Puff. Hey, I may be a pod but I watch t.v.. We're not cavemen.

Myth has it he used to be a pod, just like you and me....well, me. Growing up, he used to crack shell with the best of them. But something in him lacked the ability to feel satisfied in his own shell. At first, it was too small. Then he learned about how to play keep away on the playground and then he shorten the game to just "keep. " It made for a quick game. And he grew. At first, his tree was so proud of their pod from the branch getting big time. He really transformed into something more than any one of us could have ever imagined for ourselves. And he got all the chicks. Money, food, and luxuries were his for the taking it seemed. More and more and more and more. A few tree sheddings ago, he claimed himself The King of Pods as his inherent duty to serve us as he is so accomplished in his own endeavors. We, from the block, rallied our hometree pod, and most pods outside our local tree tuned in to his t.v. (tree vessel )commercials and saw the savior they all thought they needed. He had gone from small time pod to the great Fat Man!!

Once he was officially acknowledged as such, he found that some reappropriations were in order for the betterment of all pods. In order to do his job at 100% mental capability, 80% of our food goes to fuel his brain power to maximize his ideas for our best interest for ourselves. Very logical. 90% of our income from tree sap goes to his account well cause he obviously has the best brain power to do the best with it, right? What were we going to do with it anyway? Buy new shells? Crazytalk. And of course, 90% of our land is his since he IS 900% bigger than us. And he gets all the chicks, ..... at least, first. It's his way of giving his blessing and sharing his greatness with us all.

Now he needs to protect everything he has collected. He was the hero in created jobs in the tree sap industry. Only later did we realize he was the only who could afford to use it. And use it he did with planes, tanks, personal jets, and a personal army-- to protect us, ofcourse. But now things are getting out of control. Seems some of the pods have been starting to ask questions. And if you get too close, it could go pretty bad for a pod with a petition. He says he doesn't mean to squish anyone, he just doesn't see them while he is hard at work. So, we need some advice on what to do to balance things out .

Brewery Art Walk Fall 2011

The Brewery ArtWalk is a twice annual open studio weekend at the worlds largest art complex. With over 100 participating resident artists, you will have the opportunity to see new works, discover new favorites, speak with the artists and purchase artwork directly from the artists at studio prices.

The ArtWalk takes place October 1 and 2, 11:00 am – 6:00 pm

Admission is free and so is parking. Come and support LA’s finest artists, take home some great works and dine at the on-site restaurant.

AMBUSH EVENTS LAUNCHES EXHIBIT AMBUSH AT THE HORTON PLAZA

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On October 22, 2011, Ambush Events will take the public by storm with their featured event, “Exhibit Ambush” in the Gaslamp district of San Diego, CA. This event will push the artistic boundaries; while simultaneously keeping the audience in awe. EA will be a unique collaboration with some of the world’s most unique artists and fashion designers. This event will use charity as a means of outreach to raise money for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to, “The Amazon Foundation”. The Amazon Foundation was established in 2009 to acquire and preserve large tracts of the Amazon rainforest in their natural state in order to maintain its ecological function, biodiversity, and climatologic function and to protect the region's long-term ecological viability. The foundation is a 501 c (3) nonprofit organization with new and innovative programs to benefit children’s charities and raise awareness about the Amazon rainforest.

This event will enable people to discover and view more than a hundred artworks displayed and ten legendary-eclectic designers showcasing their extraordinary garments in meticulous detail. It will be risqué, groundbreaking and inspiring for those who relish in taking risks. In addition, this will allow the audience simultaneous interaction with the talent. There will be live body painting, professional dancers, fine art, fashion designers, accessory designers, graphic artists and live performances by the hottest DJs in town.

Over the last 18 months Ambush has worked with freelance undiscovered talent, and trained artists that are the alumni of a few local art schools including, the Art Institute San Diego, Art Institute Los Angeles, Parsons and FIDM. The process of selecting talent involved social networking, research and a few radio and newspaper castings.

With this unique project, anyone anywhere in the world will be able to learn about the artists at this event by the click of a mouse. This show will be live on the internet, in addition to the designers showing their “on” season garments. Be prepared to get “Ambushed”.

The Circus Comes to Town

LACMA's Costume Council previews Cirque du Soleil's 'Iris' costumes

Last Wednesday night, The Costume Council at LACMA closed out their season of fashion programming with a preview of Iris, Cirque du Soleil's cinema-themed spectacular that is scheduled to begin previews for a decade-long run at the Kodak Theater next month. And while members of the Council were treated to an actual scene from the performance, the evening focused on the costumes of course, with Iris costume designer Philippe Guillotel on hand to talk about his masterpieces in the best English he could.

"Magic" is how Guillotel described his intricate, elaborate stage wares — many of which feature working parts and serve dual purpose as scenery. "I love technology. And I want the costumes to just work. When it works, it's beautiful."

Among the 1920s, Art Deco-infused pieces that worked were a film can "hula hoop" that spun around its wearers hips, a vintage movie camera-as-a-hat with a working spotlight and an old timey, ruffled bustle on legs affixed to a wheel, so one actress can create the illusion of two.

Guillotel is no stranger to making magic happen through clothing, having costumed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France and also Cirque's production of Love, the Beatles homage that continues to play in Las Vegas.

When he began work on Love, he didn't know much about the Beatles. Ironically, LACMA's pop art collections ultimately served as his inspiration.

After a breakdown of sketches and examples of Iris' simpler styles — a velvet usher's outfit with a cloche hat (the bodice of which happens to serve as a film projector) and the 1920s bloomers that serve as an essential prop on a set of airborne twins — the audience caught a glimpse of a full-on Iris fashion show, complete with a a phonograph headpiece that fans out, a major braided wig and yes, the celluloid hula hoop.

They weren't the only ones who put on a fashion show. We caught some major outfits at the event reception, which took place in LACMA's outdoor courtyard — many of them worn by Costume Council members.

But no celluloid hula hoops. We'll have to go to the Kodak for those.

Laurie Brucker

Soon after relocating to Los Angeles, I began working part-time at my absolute favorite jewelry designer, Alexis Bittar. I couldn't be happier to be a part of and contribute to a truly brilliant artist of our time. Everyday I am exposed to his inspiring creations. His team, me included, truly love to be involved in his sphere of talent, integrity, and drive. I knew it would be but a short time before his energy would begin to have some influence on my own expression. All be it, his is nothing short of brilliance, that I hope someday to find in my own creations. As part of his Spring/Summer Collection, he created a series of necklaces, cuffs, and rings that layer mother of pearl, faux fern, rose beryl, and rosegold. I have admired and shared my admiration of these pieces with just about anyone willing to get an earful. I began to think of ways to incorporate the natural elements of life with the acrylic synthetic of our man made world in my own way.

So with the help and resources from my one of my dearest friends, Jen Smith, I grabbed an old root and some branches that had been laying around the backyard from one of our gardening projects. From her recent bathroom renovation, I salvaged some bits of plastered wall. I began to pour my clear medium and paint mixed with pink and pearl acrylic pigment directly on the drywall that had been primed with joint compound and adding traces of pine needles. Once dry, I began to peel up the paint in sections and playing with the shapes and reversing top coat and bottom. The shape of the root was sawed down and the branches were glued into place.

Upon completion, Jen and I sat and talked during today's raining afternoon about what could be said about this piece. What does it mean, if anything? Many of my friends know the recent challenges, sacrifices, and reflection I have been experiencing. In this re-location, I have been stripped down to the bare root of who I am; reflecting on my past victories and mistakes. You can look at this as a gnarled mess of root but the simple truth of it all is you have to trim a rose bush before it will bloom again. It's no mistake this is my first complete piece since leaving the familiar for this journey. I hope you enjoy!

The Canvas Becomes Secondary

It began when I accidently poured too much paint and clear medium onto a loose canvas laying on the wood floor one night. I let it dry overnight and the next morning the paint decided to spread from the canvas to the floor. Something told me it to leave it and the section may very well peel off the floor while continuing to remain a part of the painting. It worked and so became "Breaking Chance" shown above. The top section of paint, at a closer look, is mounted directly onto the wall so the paint seems to be actively pouring over the canvas as opposed to being contained by it. Naturally, the next step was creating an entire painting created only by paint and clear medium. The photographs below reveal some steps in my first experiment. The final piece below measured out at 13' wide x 8' wide. The painting is one single, organic section mounted directly onto the wall with mannequin pins and a light spray adhesive. It is easily taken down and remounted. I have even placed it on exhibit on the floor as a seemingly, moving painting/tapestry/rug. The detail photos reveal some of the fun abstract dancers within the piece. I hope to gain funding to further experiment with this type of process.

The paint and clear medium has just been poured directly onto the floor. The cloudiness is due to the medium and will eventually dry clear.

During the drying process, I went in and created dancers and detailed painting within its framework.

After the final drying, it was time to peel up the entire piece, 13'x 8' from the concrete.

Here is a detailed section that captures the people within this little universe.

As I stepped back, I realized the little universe that had been created. The people within dancing through life created as well as coming from the colors all around them. Furthermore, the temptations tugging at the dancers, became represented by the red dancers. it is a universe of enlightenment to animalism , choice, despair, and salvation.

The final step was to mount in one piece, directly to the wall. I used a light spray adhesive and mannequin pins to secure without permanence. It worked and held for 2 months while we exhibited it at our studio, Suite 106.

From a distance, it appears as one large stain, like a spill during a meal. Up close, reveals a micro-universe in which the dancers reach for God, fall into the depths of Hell, and everything in between. Like this piece, distance in our perspective is a form of ignorance. I will never take a stain at face value again

As always, humor gets you by and this photo I took in downtown LA, tells the autobiographic moment of all of us, trying to make a dream come true.

One of the most difficult things for me, and probably for most, is to express the complicated, contradictory, and often painful ties of love that have been built up around my family through the years, especially with my mother. You love them so much, it hurts and at times, you hurt them. My mother signifies to me the unwavering power of beauty, grace, humility, and patience in the face of turmoil that most, I hope, will never see. She can also drive me crazy. I will never understand the rationale of not only keeping the front door locked at all times with 5 different locks but not even having a key so WE can get in. Apparently, this high tech strategy will deter burglars. I have yet to feel the pure joy of walking up to our family home, climbing up the front stairs onto the vast front porch, taking out my key, unlocking the front door, and entering the foyer. Although, the back door is has been established as burglar proof and we are free to come and go as we please, especially at night when it is dark and in winter, slippery as hell. This philosophy she has held dear for 40 years and counting. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Regardless, I always knew she was special but I never fully comprehended in how many ways until late. She has shown courage and strength in ways I might never have otherwise seen in this world; never faltered in reacting to the most hurtful and stressful events with love and grace. I, being 50% cynic, or what I would like to call "a realist to certain people's bad intent when it shows its ugly face", have struggled in comprehending her almost otherworldly wisdom and joy. At times, almost thinking it a side effect of clinical delusion. How can someone be so kind and joyful when so much for her has been a struggle and a loss? I have come to learn that that is true strength and the rest of us are just whining babies. I can be forever grateful to her for her constant devotion and generosity in the face of my own selfish bouts of self loathing and projection, her constant inventory of kind words when I can't find them myself, and reminding me who I am when I occasionally forget. I am grateful that she really knows how much she means to me, even when we clash like fighting goats about the importance of, or in my opinion, lack of, Jack Van Impe, and the like. I find that in the places we polarize in thought, we secretly enjoy living through one another. Where I tend to push buttons and throw caution to the wind, she would never . But secretly, she loves to live vicariously through me, safely, in the stories I share. Just as I, though too prideful to say I listen as much as I do, secretly hold dear all the values and lessons she has learned and shares with me that have kept her going with the spunk of a 25 year old. We sing the same tune, just in two different languages. This is her painting.

So I have been playing around with found scraps, rust, peeled up pieces of dried paint, etc. I have really enjoyed the feeling like when I was a child putting my puzzles together, only this seems to have less rules.
